The market for green buildings has been increasing at a strong pace since the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) was introduced. The LEED system provides indoor and outdoor environmentally friendly guidelines for architects and building planners for new construction or renovations. In the past year, over $100 billion dollars was spent on sustainable business design for LEED certification in North America and Europe alone, $3.8 billion of which was in Ontario. In all 50 states, in Canada and 10 other countries around the world, owners and developers have registered their intent to certify their building projects under the LEED system. From a standing start in 2000, more than 1,400 projects in four years have registered to achieve various levels of LEED certification total. To date, the market has been dominated by the government and non-profit sector, together accounting for nearly 75 percent of all LEED-registered projects The largest project type is office buildings, followed by education buildings, both secondary and higher education. While the momentum of green building is exciting, it is clear that there has to be a concerted effort to effect how we operate and manage existing facilities. The green economies and lifestyles of the twenty-first century may be conceptualized by environmental thinkers, but they can only be actualized by industrial corporations.
